Two Panama Destinations Recognized Among UN’s Best Tourism Villages

What began in 2021 as an initiative by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has become a pioneering effort that supports sustainable development in rural communities. This year, two incredible villages in Panama have earned a spot on the list.
According to UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, tourism can be a key factor in “positive change for rural communities all around the world.” That’s why in May 2021, the Best Tourism Villages initiative launched its call for nominations, evaluating villages based on factors such as cultural and natural resources, environmental, economic, and social sustainability, and the promotion and conservation of cultural heritage.
Now in its fourth edition, the initiative recognizes 55 villages from around the world, and among them are El Valle de Antón and Portobello in Panama!
El Valle de Antón is a beloved destination in the Riviera Pacifica, nestled inside an inactive volcano. It comes alive especially on Sundays, when both locals and visitors gather at the famous market to shop, eat, and connect.
Portobelo, located in the province of Colón, enchants visitors with its beaches, vibrant colors, delicious flavors, and rich history. From the ruins of an old Spanish fort with weathered cannons to the powerful Afro-Congo culture that fills the streets, this village captures the essence of Panama.
