Panama Picked as Top Retirement Spot

A new report in Condé Nast Traveler, the influential travel magazine, names Panama one of the top retirement spots in the world.

The magazine investigated several important elements like tax incentives and discount programs to identify six countries, including Panama, that “offer some of the best incentives for retirees—promising to make the big move well worth your while.”

The magazine writer picked up on many reasons for Panama’s popularity as a retirement destination, which we’ve been sharing for years. There are already an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 American expats currently living in Panama, the magazine notes, many of them our happy customers who have found their perfect retirement haven.

Panama offers many benefits to retirees, starting with “the Panama Pensionado (or Panama Retirement) visa, started in 1987, is one of the best for attracting foreign nationals,” the magazine notes. “Why? It’s all about the discounts. Think of the Panama Pensionado as the ultimate coupon book.”

In addition to a permanent-residency visa, retirees qualify for import-tax exemptions on household goods and discounts on everything from utility bills to dental exams and hotel stays. The main qualification is that applicants must have a pension generating at least $1,000 a month. But even if your monthly pension falls between $750 and $999, you can still qualify by purchasing property worth at least $100,000.
