As Panama reopens to the world, anglers are getting excited about the start of the “big game” fishing season, which is legendary around the world.

You can practically feel the buzz of excitement. On Ocean Reef Islands, home to Panama City’s newest marina, many of the residents are fishing fans and they are eager to get back on the water. The marina formerly opened earlier this year, before the pandemic, and this is the first time Ocean Reef residents will be able to take full advantage of the docks during the December-January fishing season.

This will undoubtedly be a different type of season, but it’s hard to resist the lure of marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, and Dorado. Deep sea fishing is always popular in Panama, but December is when it becomes a big deal for anglers. The rainy season is over and the water conditions are perfect to attract a wide variety of big fish.

One of the most popular destinations is the world-renowned Bahia de Piñas, on the southeast edge of Panama. Home to the famed Tropic Star Lodge, the bay attracts the top fishermen for its sailfish and blue, black, and striped marlin. John Wayne, Zane Grey, and Lee Marvin are among the famed tourists who have hooked the big one in Bahia Piñas. 

More than 200 deep-sea fishing world records have been verified in the bay. It’s the place to go for that once-in-a-lifetime experience that will generate pictures and trophies to adorn your walls for years.

There’s a reason this happens. A clash of warm and cold water currents creates the perfect setting to attract the big fish from deep waters, a phenomenon that makes Bahia Piñas a truly unique area during this time of year.

But Bahia Piñas, which can be reached quickly by air from Panama City, is hardly the only option. There are plenty of other top areas to fish, many within easy distance of the Ocean Reef marina. The areas around Pearl Island, only 90 minutes from Ocean Reef, are a tropical wonderland, with some of the best fishing spots you’ll ever see.
