Panama City’s ‘Twisting Tower’ is World Record Holder

A new report on twisting towers around the world spotlights Panama City’s own distinctive skyscraper, the 53-story F & F Tower. The tower, which is one of the highlights of Panama City’s ever-changing skyline, holds the world record for “tightest twist,” according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

The F & F Tower has “the highest average rotation per floor at 5.943 degrees across each of its 53 floors,” according to the CTBUH, which tracks tall buildings. In other words, the F & F is the “twistiest” tall building in the world.

While the twisting—or spiraling—towers create a unique look, the design also serves specific purposes to the operations of the buildings. For example, the design of the F & F Tower, which is the fifth-tallest twisting tower in the world, allows for each floor to have four external balconies.

The twisting forms can also help the wind circulation around the building, improve views and provide shade, reducing cooling costs, the CTBUH notes.

The F & F Tower was completed in 2011 and reaches 233 meters tall, making it the ninth-tallest tower in Panama City, the CTBUH reports. The tallest is the Trump Ocean Club, at 284 meters, located at the exclusive Punta Pacifica neighborhood.

As recently noted, Panama City has become the skyscraper capital of Latin America.

The tallest twisting tower in the world is the recently completed 632-meter Shanghai Tower, followed by the 432-meter Diamond Tower under development in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
