Is Another U.S. Tech Giant Ready to Expand in Panama City?

A Panama government agency released a tantalizing tidbit of news a couple of days ago. According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, technology giant Microsoft is in discussions to establish a regional headquarters in Panama.

Details were vague, but the Ministry said Microsoft is considering a facility that would make Panama City its regional hub, including a “data center, a regional operations office and other departments,” La Prensa reports. Trade Minister Meliton Arrocha reportedly met with Mariano De Beer, the regional director for Latin America and José Marante, general manager of Microsoft Panama.

“An upcoming meeting between the two to advance the search for positive results is expected,” the Ministry’s statement added.

If it works out, this could be huge news for Panama City real estate. A major player like Microsoft means more high-level jobs and more renters and buyers in Punta Pacifica. A larger Microsoft presence also means more exposure for sunny Panama City in the rainy northwest, which is already a big source of buyers and tourists for Panama.

Panama now has 114 regional headquarters of multinational companies, including 28 from the United States, the Ministry reports. At Punta Pacifica Realty, our property management team works closely with big multi-nationals like Caterpillar, HP, Maresk and P & G. We know how the corporations work and what they want for their executives. If Microsoft is coming to town, Punta Pacifica is going to be the first stop for many of their executives.
