Modern Panama City Taking Shape

If you haven’t been to Panama City in a while, you’re in for a surprise. The capital is full of new energy and life, as it takes its place among the great cities of Latin America.

You can see the changes and the modern Panama City taking shape around the city, and it’s not only the beautiful new residential developments. There is a growing vibrancy to the city, as new shops and businesses energize neighborhoods. While Punta Pacifica, remains the social and residential hub of modern Panama City, older neighborhoods like Obarrio are gaining new vitality, as new residents move in from Panama and around the world.

In recent weeks we’ve been talking a lot about MOVA by B&B Italia, a game-changing development that blends Italian flair into a mixed-use neighborhood that would look right at home in Milan or Barcelona. It is part of a “superblock” anchored by the new headquarters of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), which is earning praise for a sustainable design that emphasizes walkability and public spaces.

We’re excited about the potential for this blend of retail, business, and social amenities to be a catalyst that will transform the Financial District. But it’s just part of the downtown story.

You can feel that downtown has passed that “critical mass,” where new residential developments, amenities, and nightlife have come together at the same time. On any given day, around the bay, you see joggers and bicyclists enjoying the waterfront Cinta Costera trail. The streets are alive with shops and activities. Casco Viejo has reached its potential as a stylish, sophisticated nightlife district.

Panama City has always flourished as a combination of old and new, and now that is more true than ever. You can see it in growing traditions like the annual jazz festival, or lunchtime at the bayfront fish market. International-level chefs are practicing their craft down the street from family restaurants that have been serving the same dishes for generations.

The modern Panama City has something for everyone. More than anything, it’s a great place to live and thrive.

Haven’t visited in a while? It’s time to catch up.
